AGAMA Beat Manica Diamonds and Give Their Survival Hopes a Lift

AGAMA gave themselves a badly needed lift in the fight against relegation with a 1 to 0 win over Manica Diamonds at Wadzanayi Stadium.
Ousmane Dieme scored in the eighth minute and that early goal proved enough. AGAMA spent the rest of the afternoon protecting the lead and, when the final whistle came, they had three points that could be worth far more than the scoreline suggests.
The result also gave Anderson Phiri the perfect start in charge. Phiri is AGAMA's fifth coach of the season, which tells its own story about a difficult and unsettled first year in the Premier Soccer League. Changing coaches so often can make it difficult for players to settle into a clear way of playing. New ideas arrive, roles change and confidence can be affected.
On this occasion, however, the latest change brought an immediate result. AGAMA were not spectacular, but they did what teams in a relegation fight often have to do. They scored first, stayed organised and made sure Manica Diamonds could not find a way back into the game.
Manica's problems in front of goal continued. They have struggled for goals throughout the season, and another blank at Wadzanayi made their position more uncomfortable with only a handful of matches left. Herbert Maruwa's side had enough time to respond after conceding so early, but they could not turn their possession into a goal.
At this stage of the season, missed chances carry more weight because there are fewer matches left to repair the damage.
The wider results also helped show why AGAMA's win mattered. TelOne were beaten heavily by Hardrock and remained on 20 points, while FC Hunters picked up only one point at Ngezi Platinum Stars. AGAMA moved to 25 points and gave themselves a better platform for the final six games.
They are not safe, and nobody around the club will pretend otherwise. Still, survival battles are often changed by one scrappy afternoon when a team finds a way to win. This was one of those afternoons. Dieme scored early, AGAMA held on, and suddenly the fight looks a little less hopeless.
