Round 28 Tightens the Title Race as Hardrock Close In on Scottland

Scottland still lead the table, but Hardrock are now only one point behind after a weekend that also brought derby tension and fresh pressure at the bottom.
Round 28 may not have produced many goals, but it changed the shape of the title race. Scottland were held by FC Platinum and Hardrock took full advantage, cutting the gap at the top to a single point.
Scottland started the round at Rufaro Stadium, where FC Platinum frustrated them in a goalless draw. The champions had chances to put daylight between themselves and the chasing pack, but they could not find the breakthrough. By the end of the weekend, that missed opportunity looked much more significant.
Hardrock responded with the biggest win of the round. They beat TelOne 4 to 1 at Chahwanda Stadium, with Sambulo Simelane scoring twice. Donald Mudadi and Last Nyilenda also found the net, while Evans Katema scored for TelOne. TelOne ended the match with ten men after Nqobizitha Masuku received a second yellow card in stoppage time. The defeat deepened their relegation worries, while Hardrock moved to 57 points, one behind Scottland on 58.
The Harare derby also gave supporters something to talk about. Dynamos went ahead through Wisdom Mutasa, whose long range strike broke the deadlock in the second half. CAPS United hit back almost immediately through Obriel Chirinda, who produced a fine volley to make it 1 to 1.
AGAMA earned one of the most valuable wins of the round. Ousmane Dieme scored early as they beat Manica Diamonds 1 to 0. It was a winning start for Anderson Phiri, who became the club's fifth coach of the season. That statistic says plenty about how unsettled AGAMA have been this year.
Herentals also collected three points, beating Bulawayo Chiefs 2 to 1. Ralph Kawondera and Tinashe Mupumha scored in the second half before Clive Rupiya pulled one back late on.
The rest of the round was much tighter. Chicken Inn drew 0 to 0 with MWOS, Ngezi Platinum Stars drew 0 to 0 with FC Hunters, Triangle United drew 0 to 0 with Highlanders, and ZPC Kariba drew 0 to 0 with Simba Bhora. Only 11 goals were scored across the nine matches, and five games finished goalless.
Even so, the weekend was anything but dull. The main story was at the top of the table, where Hardrock turned another Scottland stumble into real pressure. With six matches left for most teams, there is almost no room for error now. Scottland still have the advantage, but Hardrock are close enough to make every remaining result matter.
